How Old Do You Have to Be to Rent a Car in Australia?

Planning to hit the open road and explore Australia’s incredible sights? Whether you’re a young adventurer in your twenties or embracing the freedom of retirement (cheers to that!), knowing the age requirements for car rental can make all the difference. Understanding these details upfront helps you avoid surprises and ensures a smooth start to your journey.

Keep scrolling for a clear guide on what to expect, so when it’s time to pick up your keys, you’re ready to roll with complete confidence.

What is the minimum car rental age in Australia?

In Australia, renting a car isn’t just about having a licence. It’s about experience, too. You’ll need to be at least 21 years old and have held a full, unrestricted licence for 12 months or more.

While some 18-year-olds may be licensed, most rental companies (including ours) require that extra year behind the wheel. The good news? At Bargain Car Rentals, we don’t charge a Young Driver Surcharge, while many others do.

Under 25 drivers pay no surcharge, but here’s what to expect

While drivers aged 21 to 24 pay the same rates as older drivers, it doesn’t mean that there aren’t any restrictions at all. Younger drivers may have restricted access to certain vehicles, including luxury models. Additionally, reducing the insurance excess may also be off the table.

As the renter, you can choose to have one additional driver for your vehicle at no extra charge. The same rules apply: drivers must be over 21, and every driver needs to be listed on the rental agreement.

Unregistered drivers won’t be insured, and trying to avoid fees by booking in someone else’s name isn’t allowed. Being aware of these policies helps you plan ahead and makes the entire rental experience smooth sailing.

Are you over 75? Here’s what you need to know

Adventure knows no age limit at Bargain Car Rentals, where customers up to 85 can hit the road. Although there’s no official maximum age for renting in Australia, some depots may request medical clearance. Calling ahead helps ensure a smooth start to your trip.

Please be aware that the rental depot has the final say on renting vehicles to drivers over 85.

What is the maximum age limit for renting a car in Australia?

While many companies set lower maximum age limits, Bargain Car Rentals accommodates senior drivers up to 85 years of age with no extra hassle. Just ensure you have a valid, unrestricted licence, and if needed, be prepared to provide any additional documentation.

Do young drivers face restrictions when renting certain vehicles?

Drivers under 25 often face limits on what vehicle types they can hire. For example, at Bargain Car Rentals, luxury cars are not available. That said, there’s still a wide range of safe, modern vehicles available to suit most travel needs, from compact hatchbacks to practical sedans.

Can I hire while on my P Plates?

Learner permit holders, provisional licence holders or those on probationary licences are not eligible to rent or drive our vehicles. To ensure safety and compliance with rental policies, only drivers with a full, unrestricted licence are accepted. This helps guarantee a smooth and secure rental experience for everyone.
