About the area
Eaglehawk Neck is a spectacular isthmus which connects the Tasmanian mainland with the Forestier Peninsula, home of the Port Arthur Historic Site and a bevy of wilderness highlights. The dramatic landscape lends itself well to photography and the many rugged geological formations are a treat to discover on a self-drive day trip. A mecca for hikers, rock climbers, kayakers and sightseers, Eaglehawk Neck is just an hour’s drive south of Hobart, although with the sheer amount of attractions in the area it’ll be worth your while to stay a night or two and explore it at leisure.
What to see and do here
You’ll no doubt want to spend a few hours retracing the steps of the hapless early convicts who were banished here all those moons ago and, in this aspect, Port Arthur is exceptionally fascinating. Yet there’s a lot more to the Tasman Peninsula than only Port Arthur! Other top attractions and activities here include:
Wild Ocean Tasmania – Fantastic marine-life watching tours with a group of passionately committed wildlife lovers. Head here at the right time of year and, if you’re lucky, you’ll be rubbing shoulders with pods of dolphins and get to swim with playful seals!
Hike at Waterfall Bay – Enjoy the scenic coastal views on this leisurely 1hr return hike, which starts from the carpark of Tasman Arch viewpoint and meanders its way along the coast on a well-maintained trail.
Devil’s Kitchen, Tasman Arch and Tasman Blowhole – The most famous rock formations in the Peninsula, this breathtaking trifecta are a photographer’s dream. The sites are just a few km off the main road to/from Port Arthur and ample parking space is available, especially in the early afternoon, after all the tourist buses have come and gone.
Tessellated Pavement – A stunning natural phenomenon that looks manmade, the Tessellated Pavement is a visual feast, located just 2 minutes’ walk from the Lufra Hotel. Often overlooked by day trippers who choose to stay in Hobart, this is one of Eaglehawk Neck’s most startling attractions, the Tessellated Pavement is Mother Nature’s best attempt at paving, one that’s best viewed at low tide.
