Located in the southern town of Kettering (on the shores of D’Entrecasteaux Channel in the south), The Raptor and Wildlife Refuge offers unforgettable wildlife experiences with some of the most awe-inspiring birds of prey you will ever see.
A fantastic hidden-secret in the Huon Valley and a must for wildlife enthusiasts.
How to visit the Raptor and Wildlife Refuge Centre
Just a few kms north of the mainland ferry port to Bruny Island, the Raptor Refuge can be easily visited either before getting on the ferry or on your way back. The D’Entrecasteaux Channel is the core of the beautiful Huon Valley and part of the Huon Trail, which takes in the very best highlights of southern Tasmania. Nearby attractions include the end of the southern road at Cockle Creek, with fantastic ocean views across the bay, the orchid-filled Huon Valley and a number of charming rural villages brimming with cool cafés, produce markets and boutique retreats to extend your stay even longer. A wonderful region to explore at length, the Huon Valley offers dramatic coastal scenery, luscious valleys, wildlife galore and some of the most delicious gourmet food on the whole island.
About the refuge centre
A committed team of wildlife specialists who take in sick, injured and orphaned raptors, the brains and brawns behind The Raptor and Wildlife Refuge aim to educate the public, reduce human impact on the habitat of these most spectacular creatures and help them thrive in their natural environment. Although a bustling, fully-working refuge centre, small groups of visitors are welcomed to come and tour the premises and get an in-depth look at the kind of conservation work carried out here. Their harrowing stories will bring a tear to your eyes and the successful rehab effects make your heart burst with happiness. WOW! Is how all visitors can best describe the private tours and encounters with regal raptors who are, in reality, very lucky to have found their way to such incredible people.
It is hoped that, through these tours, public awareness for the plight of Tasmanian raptors will be infinitely increased, creating less work for the rescuers and much happier, wilder lives for their beloved rescues.
A not-for-profit organization started by a local veterinary nurse and licensed wildlife carer who spent many years working in the Kimberley Region of northern Australia, the Raptor and Wildlife Refuge is one of the most unique and rewarding attractions in all of Tasmania and a must-visit if touring the southern Huon Valley region. Home to three of the world’s largest raptor aviaries, the centre rescues and rehabilitates Wedge-tailed and sea eagles, among many more species, including inquisitive and rather mesmerizing owls. Visit the Raptors of Tasmania page for a comprehensive list of the island’s resident raptors.
